Schlenkerla, founded in 1405 in Bamberg, the historic heart of German brewing, is the global benchmark for the Rauchbier (smoked beer) style. Its uniqueness lies in the preservation of ancient traditions: it remains one of the very few breweries in the world to operate its own floor malting, drying the grain over open fires of beech, oak, or cherry logs. Today, the sixth generation of the Trum family continues to safeguard this liquid heritage. A glass of Schlenkerla is a true journey through history. Until the mid-18th century, nearly all beer possessed a smoky character, as malt could only be dried over open flames. To drink Schlenkerla today is to experience the same authentic, robust flavor that a mariner might have enjoyed during the Age of Discovery. In recognition of its cultural and gastronomic significance, Schlenkerla has been a member of the Slow Food® Ark of Taste since 2017.
